Iowa Public Radio Series: Being Gay in Iowa

Julie being interviewed at Iowa Public Radio

One episode is entitled
“Being Gay in Iowa: The Children”

I am one of the children featured in this story.

This episode talks about the children. “Many same-sex couples have children. Some had them while in opposite-sex marriages before coming out. Others are becoming parents through sperm donors or adoption. What is life like for these kids who were raised in homes that are out-of-the-norm?”

Being the child of a gay man was never an issue for me personally – he is my father, I love him to the ends of the earth and back! However, there were many times I became frustrated with having to ‘deal’ with the people who hated my father for simply being who he is, a gay man.

One of my proudest accomplishments is that MY children don’t think anything of the fact that two of their grandparents just so happen to be two gay males. They tell people they are going to go visit Grandpa and Grandpa without a second thought. It is normal for them.

One of the others Zach Wahls, a University of Iowa engineering student and Eagle Scout whose parents just happen to be lesbians.

Wahls gave a three-minute speech before Iowa legislators urging them not to pass a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and civil unions.

His heartfelt words, so beautifully capturing what sooooo many children of GLBT parents feel, went viral across the Internet and has received over 1.5 million hits on YouTube, been broadcasted on CNN, MSNBC, Good Morning America.
